Gold is one of the five main resources. The city economy and the Grand Market provide different routes for gold-related activity, depending on your building levels and active world rules.
Do not assume a market listing will sell immediately. Player trade depends on another participant choosing to buy an available offer. Similarly, building income is bounded by the engine; it is not a substitute for every other resource.
Keep a reserve for upgrades, research and the units you genuinely need. When comparing choices, check the visible costs and cooldowns in the game before confirming.
