Chip families include combat, defense, targeting, logistics, naval, scouting, economy and countermeasure-oriented chips. Multiple tiers exist in the catalog, and higher tiers have increasing requirements.

To use a chip, first confirm that the relevant research and facility are available, then use the game's manufacture/equip controls. The UI and world rules govern what a chip can be attached to. Technology includes tradeoffs, not only additive power.
